The Old Timer - 44 months with 1st Battalion 6th Infantry in Vietnam

[Note:  Howard W. Walker arrived in Vietnam with the 1st Bn 6th Inf in October 1967.  He left the
unit in July 1970 and returned to CONUS.  Photo provided by Don Kaiser A/1-6 Inf '67]

SSG Walker was only one of approximately 30,000 Canadians who volunteered for the US Army
in order to serve in Vietnam.  Because of casualties and a scarcity of officer, SSG Walker served for
nine months a platoon leader.  Most of his time with the unit was spent as the Chemical NCO and
Ammo Chief.  Three photos of the ammo point are shown below.

The containers on the right hold high-explosive (HE) and anti-personnel rounds for the 90mm
recoilless rifle.

Note the cases of 40mm HE "thump gun" ammo in the center bay.
"Rambo" photo at LZ Bayonet. Yes, if you stay in Vietnam long enough, they will name something
after you -- in this case a deluxe two seater, with more or less continuous screen.

SGT Walker poses for a photo with a sign, thought to be at LZ Bayonet in early 1968 (but it might be at the LZ Baldy complex).  His "Robin Hood" hat showed all the fire support bases that he operated from during his time in Vietnam.  Lower right photo is of his squad.  Photos provided by Howard Walker.
